Christian Science: Its “Clear, Correct Teaching” and Complete Writings
Eustace, Herbert W. Christian Science: Its “Clear, Correct Teaching” and Complete Writings. Berkeley: Lederer, Street & Zeus Co., 1959.
Eustace continued writing and teaching after his excommunication from The Mother Church in 1922, claiming that he was “busier and more active in the work of Christian Science than ever before. In being released from every form of ecclesiastical organization, I was freed. … The demand for ‘clear, correct teaching,’ [quote from Mary Baker Eddy, Miscellany, 297] is becoming greater all the time” (51). This multi-volume book includes the 510 pages of his class teaching as well as two other books and other essays. In the 27-page section titled, “To the Reader,” Eustace explains his role and perspective as a trustee in the legal dispute with the Christian Science Board of Directors over Eddy’s Deed of Trust for the Christian Science Publishing Society. “The trustees were standing for the absolute democracy of Christian Science, the right of the individual Christian Scientist to perform whatever duty is entrusted to him, …without interference from any so-called supreme human authority” (43). Accusing the Christian Science Board of Directors of dictatorship, he expresses his dismay: “Ecclesiasticism, now feeling itself more firmly entrenched, promptly invoked its traditional weapon of excommunication” (44). The last 500 pages of the volume includes his elucidation on the “pure divine metaphysics, given by Mary Baker Eddy, the one Revelator of Christian Science, in Science and Health” (7).
