“Coming Out for Good”
Taffel, Tom. “Coming Out for Good.” Emergence International, Inc. May 12, 2019.
Taffel imparts his turbulent journey as a gay junior high school student navigating his way into adulthood in New York City in the late 1960s. Bullied and depressed to the point of suicide, he never lost sight of his faith that he was God’s child and had a purpose to help others. During this time of emergence, he was a student enrolled in the Christian Science Sunday School. It is here that he found guidance in Mary Baker Eddy’s writings leading him to a genuine sense of his spiritual identity and of God’s love and protection. Initially he tried unsuccessfully to conform to the traditional views of marriage and family, but eventually his conviction grew that as God’s beloved son, there was nothing abnormal about him. As he embraced diversity as “part of the …myriad expressions of Life,” his partner-now-spouse of 47+ years came into his life. The Christian Science church would not accept this article for publication saying the timing wasn’t right. But Taffel compellingly elucidates the spiritual ideas and values, grounded in Christian Science, that fortified his path to self-worth, honesty and “living my truth.”
