Dominion Within
Kratzer, Glenn. A. Dominion Within. Santa Clarita, CA: The Bookmark, (1913) 2003.
Kratzer, a scholar and Christian Science practitioner during Mary Baker Eddy’s last years, wrote several articles and pamphlets on the practice of Christian Science healing and metaphysical reasoning. One of them, titled “Dominion Within,” was published in the 29 February 1908 Christian Science Sentinel and won him praise from Eddy. “It is reproduced as the first article in this [1913] book, it having been long out of print,” Kratzer notes (7). Ernest J. Brosang, who republished this book and several other works of Kratzer’s in 1952, explains that shortly after Kratzer compiled and published Teaching and Addresses of Edward A. Kimball, he (Kratzer) was excommunicated from the Christian Science Church (Brosang, 102). Kratzer’s articles in Dominion Within (written before and after his severance with the church) are similar to contemporary blogs, in that they consist of his thoughts on the practical application of Christian Science toward the issues of his day. For instance, an article “Getting Rich” counsels that “We experience good in connection with materiality, not because of it, but in spite of it” (24). Other articles cover subjects such as “Love meets all needs” and “God-Consciousness versus Sub-consciousness.” The last article, “The Lame Walk” includes a detailed account of his healing a man with a severely injured ankle.
