“Ein Zeichen der Zeit”
Stanger, Theodore. “Ein Zeichen der Zeit.” Der Herold der Christlichen Wissenschaft 14, no. 11 (February 1917) 461-66.
Stanger provides a summary of a 23-page article entitled “Scientismus” (‘Scientism’) by Karl Holl, Professor of Church and Dogma History at the University of Berlin, as found in Zeitschrift für die gesamte Strafrechtswissenschaft (‘Comprehensive Journal of Penology’), vol. 37, Issue 5. Stanger’s summary in Der Herold is an appreciation of the thoroughness, accuracy and sympathetic perspective of Holl’s overview of the Christian Science church, its founder and its doctrines. Holl wrote for criminologists from the perspective of a religious scholar outside the Christian Science movement, to correct the prejudice and injustice evident in many writings critical of Eddy. Holl examined the well-known American attacks (Mark Twain, McClure’s Magazine), and cited both positive and negative German publications. According to Stanger, Holl’s study was likely occasioned by a recent “well-known legal action in Berlin against two representatives of Christian Science” (461).
