“Footprints Fadeless” in Mary Baker Eddy Speaking for Herself
Eddy, Mary Baker. “Footprints Fadeless,” Pages 81-165 in Mary Baker Eddy Speaking for Herself. Boston: The Writings of Mary Baker Eddy, (1901) 2002.
This brief book is Mary Baker Eddy’s response to the vicious accusations thrown at her by Frederick Peabody, a lawyer who represented a client in litigation against Eddy. Although he lost the 1901 case, he continued his attack through his books and lectures, agitating further public opposition. Eddy’s advisors recommended she not publish her 1901 response to Peabody since it could stir even further public agitation. But the Christian Science Publishing Society did publish it (“Footprints Fadeless”) for the first time, about a century later (2002). (Subscribers to the Christian Science Journal can read about this here.) This valuable book gives modern readers a better perspective of Eddy’s own self-understanding. She includes letters and other documents countering all of Peabody’s major undocumented accusations on topics such as Eddy’s relationships with Dr. Quimby and her sons; her view of marriage (specifically, her own as well as marriages of others); her business transactions; the infringement on her book, Science and Health; and her attitudes toward Spiritualism, mental malpractice, and Jesus Christ.
