In My True Light and Life: Mary Baker Eddy Collections
Writings of Mary Baker Eddy, The. In My True Light and Life: Mary Baker Eddy Collections. Boston: The Writings of Mary Baker Eddy and The Mary Baker Eddy Library for the Betterment of Humanity, 2002.
Generally, the editors of this Bibliography exclude readily available primary works by Mary Baker Eddy. But this large anthology of primary and secondary sources is of great value to scholars because it was published in conjunction with the 2002 opening of the Church archives in the new Mary Baker Eddy Library (for the Betterment of Humanity, as it was called at first). Some sections provide material not readily available in other published works, such as early family letters and images and transcriptions of pages from Eddy’s Bibles. Other helpful insights into Eddy’s life journey surface from the collection of written ‘conversations’ and stories from adults who first met Eddy when they were children. From tens of thousands of letters written by Eddy, a “reader catches a glimpse of her wit, her perceptive analysis of situations, her mothering, her nurturing, and of course, her leadership as evidenced in the ability to face and conquer the most challenging circumstances” (419). Other useful highlights from the collection include a clear 10-page historical timeline; samples of Eddy’s earliest writings, including the Genesis manuscript and its spiritual meaning; healing accounts; Eddy in the news; and the launching of The Christian Science Monitor.
