Life Understood from a Scientific and Religious Point of View and the Practical Method of Destroying Sin, Disease, and Death
Rawson, Frederick L. Life Understood from a Scientific and Religious Point of View and the Practical Method of Destroying Sin, Disease, and Death. London: J. M. Dent & Sons, Ltd., 1912.
Although Rawson stated at the time he compiled this book that he was “not nominally a member of the Christian Science Church” (325), he also claimed that his relationship with Mary Baker Eddy was with one “whom [he] revere[d] as a leader and love[d] as a fellow-worker, and of whose writings [he] acknowledge[d] [him]self a student…”(330). In subsequent books, such as Plea for the Open Door, he argued it was Eddy’s intention that The Mother Church should be disbanded upon her death. But in this book, he represented himself as a student of scientific knowledge of natural science and practical metaphysics. Hundreds of pages are devoted to the analysis of scientific issues such as “the death struggle of nature,” “a chemical concept,” and “the metaphysical view of time space.” He also addressed the views of philosophers, and medical topics. In the last section (9 pages) before the 200-page appendices, he explained Christian Science in relation to his current work. “I would therefore reiterate that this discourse is obviously not a lecture upon, nor does it pretend to be an elucidation of, Christian Science, but is primarily an exposure of the innumerable fallacies of human theories past and present, made evident through the study of Christian Science” (327).
