“Lulu Knight”
Mary Baker Eddy Library, The. “Lulu Knight.” Released 9 October 2017.
As the first Black American to serve as an authorized teacher of Christian Science, Lulu M. Knight made significant contributions to the practice of Christian Science healing in Chicago. Knight became a member of The Mother Church in 1912 and a healing practitioner listed in The Christian Science Journal in 1930. In 1943, she became a Christian Science teacher which allowed her to teach a two-week annual class on Christian Science. Throughout her life, “Knight witnessed changes in American society – and in the Christian Science church. Her 1912 Mother Church membership record was annotated ‘(Negro)’. Her Journal listing carried the designation ‘(colored)’ until 1956, when that qualifier was dropped from Black American practitioners.” Despite these racial separations between Black church members from the rest of the congregation, Knight remained devoted to the study and practice of Christian Science. In 1967 she wrote to the Board of Directors that “After having spent almost forty years in Christian Science healing and teaching, I by no means take my obligations to the Cause of Christian Science lightly. I understand its demands and have endeavored to live up to them.”
