On June 24, 1990, anti-apartheid activist and future president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, made a surprise visit to the Christian Science Church in Boston. While on his world fundraising tour, Mandela visited eight American cities in just over 12 days, Boston being one of them. When asked about his visit, Mandela responded by saying that The Christian Science Monitor was one of the publications he was allowed to read in prison and that the newspaper “was well known to me during my 27 years in prison… It continues to give me hope and confidence for the world’s future.”
