Martha Matilda Harper, a prominent business woman in the 1880s, founded and owned Harper Method Beauty Shops and its franchise. Most of the franchisees came from modest backgrounds. During a time of ill health, Harper’s previous employers suggested she contact a Christian Science healing practitioner. She would later remark that her initial encounter with Christian Science was “a turning point in her life and career.” She would publicly credit Christian Science with healing her and sustaining her through decades in business.
