Medicine Women, A Pictorial History of Women Healers
Brooke, Elisabeth. Medicine Women, A Pictorial History of Women Healers. Wheaton, IL: Quest Books, 1997.
This “history of women healers” places Mary Baker Eddy within the context of a sociological and historical view of women in the ministry of healing. Brooke argues that “throughout history women have been persecuted for practicing medicine” (9), but in her coverage of Eddy (40-43), she neglects to mention the persecution Eddy suffered from the prejudices against women as both healers and Christian leaders. Brooke emphasizes Eddy’s theological basis for healing from the teachings and example of Jesus. She also describes the training and self-appointment of modern Christian Science practitioners.
