Sermons Which Spiritually Interpret the Scriptures and Other Writings on Christian Science

Sermons Which Spiritually Interpret the Scriptures and Other Writings on Christian Science

Stetson, Augusta E. Sermons Which Spiritually Interpret the Scriptures and Other Writings on Christian Science. New York: G. P. Putnam’s Sons, 1924.

This book, the last of Stetson’s scrap-book type collections, is a rich resource for primary documents. It begins with photographs, a defense of her American nativity, a preface defending her position against her enemies, and extensive dedication, all before the first chapter, which is a review of her ordeal with the Church. Pictures of herself and Mary Baker Eddy wearing pins of ‘the crown’ contrast with Eddy’s preference for ‘the cross.’ Stetson proclaims: “I know my mission, and I shall continue to defend and demonstrate genuine Christian Science, as my Teacher and Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, requested me to do. I do not regard physical personalities as real. … I am instructed … to interpret Scriptures spiritually.” (xxvi). This book is interspersed with Stetson’s sermons, such as “The Scientific, Metaphysical, Spiritual Definition of ‘Birth Control’.” Her letters, legal decisions, and published articles defending her position against the Church that excommunicated her are quite numerous. Other textual genres include concert programs of the Oratorio Society (including her poetry and composition) and testimonials. Stetson’s strong political position, such as her disdain for Francis Scott Key’s ‘ballad of venom,’ (i.e., national anthem) appears in articles and appendices that include the Declaration of Independence, US Constitution, and Monroe Doctrine.
