The Relevancy of Christian Healing Today
Cooling, Anne Hindmarsh. The Relevancy of Christian Healing Today. Travis House Publications, 2024.
Cooling comes to her topic of Christian healing as a practitioner of Christian healing and with an MA of Arts in Theology. Her intent is “to share the spiritual gift of healing from the Christian Science tradition at the fellowship table of Christianity” (6). Cooling begins her book by examining the role of healing in the New Testament gospels in relation to the temple, Jewish law, the Gentiles, and as a way of salvation. She follows by defining the elements that constitute Christian healing such as the role of gratitude and faith, and the presence of the Holy Spirit. She then invites to the “table fellowship” the Ante-Nicene Fathers, letting their writings reveal evidence in the care of the sick of both spiritual healing and nursing care, the laying on of hands, anointing of oil, and prayer. She then brings to the table both the Pentecostal and Christian Science traditions to explore similarities and differences: in their histories, healing practices, who the healers are, present challenges, and relationships with conventional medicine. Overall, Cooling’s intent is to revisit the role of spiritual healing in Christian history so that Christians today may find renewed relevance and meaning in their own healing practices.
