We Knew Mary Baker Eddy, Expanded Version Volume 2
Christian Science Publishing Society, The. We Knew Mary Baker Eddy, Expanded Version. Vol. 2 of 2. Boston: The Christian Science Publishing Society, 2013.
Unlike the first volume in this Expanded Version of the We Knew Mary Baker Eddy series, this second volume includes all new material unavailable in the original series of four volumes by the same title. It consists of accounts from 22 individuals who had served Eddy in her home and in support of the founding of Mary Baker Eddy’s church. All writers were self-selected workers who loved what they perceived as Eddy’s contribution to the world and were willing to make great sacrifices to serve her. Conscious of his own effusive admiration (but not worship), Joseph Mann explains, “I should despair of doing justice to Mrs. Eddy’s closet-life through the medium of word-painting, and were I able to write what I know, the world would regard my portrayal as a canonizing idealism” (146). But writers also acknowledged more so in this volume than in previous works in the series, that Eddy was “severe with any unnecessary lack in those of whom she expected much, and it was proof of her love that she was so. No excuse or apology could be offered” (297). This volume is rich in details that illustrate both the mundane and the spiritually enlightened experience of Eddy’s human life.
