Appel describes an early twentieth-century movement of Jews to Christian Science ranging in numbers from 6,000 to 200,000. Appel claims the appeal was to mysticism, positive thinking, and spiritual healing rather than a desire to assimilate with Christian majorities. Countering this movement within Judaism was the founding of the Society of Jewish Science in 1922 by Rabbi Morris Lichtenstein.
